Partain wins December 20 single elim

December 20, 2003:
Today's ACC Pegging Pals single elimination tournament was won by Linda A. Partain (cheeky_parrot1) from Haverhill, MA, defeating John madison_wi Anderson (guess where he's from), in two straight games, thereby denying Anderson the distinction of being the first to win two ACC Internet tournaments. Anderson had won the previous Saturday single elimination event on December 6, while Partain finished Third in the same tourney. Better watch out for these two, especially if you play on Saturday afternoon.

An unusual play from the second game of this finals match was Partain's lead of the 6 from 3-3-3-6 on Second Street. Anderson had A-A-2-2, which led to the following exchange:

6  2  3  A (12-3)  3 (15-2)  2 (17-3)  3  A (21-4)

Despite giving up ten pegs, Partain was grateful for her 15-2, since on the game's last deal she went out as pone with only one point to spare.

Tying for Third Place were Stu Kelly (studude13) of Federal Way, WA, and Thomas Payne (majortom1) of Pinedale, WY. Once again the final four reflected the geographical diversity of the ACC, with four players from four different time zones all competing together in the same online event. Here on the Internet your opponent might just as easily be down the street or across the continent.

The 50 participants had to contend with some of the worst Internet conditions in recent memory, and ACC officials had to jump through several hoops to pull off the event. The first hurdle came when the designated tournament director, Joan Dulworth (+LovesPeace), got trapped in holiday traffic on her way home and was unable to get to her computer in time. That's not a showstopper in the ACC though — we always have a backup host available, so Karen Peake (+Lady_Amber) stepped in with help from Gerald Oxford (+_TheOx_1). But then the Internet troubles kicked in, and both Peake and Oxford were dumped out of the tournament room. In the end, Peake could post messages to the lobby but was unable to see anything else going on in the tournament room. Oxford was unable to reenter the room at all, even after rebooting his PC and clearing his cookies and temporary Internet files. Michael Schell (+Sche11), our Assistant Commissioner, was able to reach the lobby, and he relayed the match results to Peake, who updated the tournament chart and messaged each succeeding round's pairings back to Schell to be posted in the lobby. Thanks to the perseverance of the hosts and the patience of our participating members, the ACC was able to complete the tournament on a day when many other Zone.com events had to be cancelled.

ACC Internet Cribbage will be taking a holiday break until Saturday, January 3. Hopefully this will give MSN Game's technical staff an opportunity to work out some of the kinks in their recent software revision. (back...)
