ACC Internet Cribbage

Inaugural Cribbage Cup event won by Bob Iocapi

December 1, 2003:
Tonight the ACC held the first in a series of experimental Cribbage Cup events that feature a combined round-robin single elimination format. The tournament was closed after 60 signups, and these players were divided into ten groups of six players who played five games against one-another. Players finishing with three or more wins in the qualifying round advanced to single elimination 4-stake playoff matches. As luck would have it, the finalists each came from the same city and Grass Roots club as San Jose's Bob Iacopi (mangiamo1) prevailed over Master Dale Kochenburg (peggerd2394). It was Iacopi's first high finish in an ACC Internet tournament, while Kochenburg is quickly becoming an old hand at it, having previously taken Third Place in our November 8, 2003 event.

Other ACC members reaching the final eight were Dennis Allen (DeadHoleDennis), Master and 2001–2002 ACC Rookie of the Year David Campbell (dc2121) and our Internet Statistician Rick Allen (Richmond_Hokie). Jon Taylor (AZ389) of Gilbert, AZ shared top qualifier honors with two non-members, and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Director Karen Peake (+Lady_Amber) suffered a debilitating computer crash shortly after the tournament began, and was unable to return until just before the end. Fortunately the ACC insists on backup TDs for all online tournaments, and Joan Dulworth (+LovesPeace) and Rick LaVallee (+__TheBard) stepped in and got things moving again after a short delay.

Check the tournament schedule for future Cribbage Cup events (as well as other ACC online tournaments). Please let us know what you think of this unusual format! Note that the Cribbage Cup tournament are held in Tournament Room 5, unlike most other ACC events, which take place in Tournament Room 6

November 20 single elimination draws over 100

November 20, 2003:
Our Thursday night single elimination tournaments continue to be popular, as 104 peggers attended tonight's event. Per MSN Games policy, non-members are welcome to play in ACC events held there, and on this occasion one of them finally won! Since the ACC cannot verify the online identity of non-members, we do not name them when we report on our Internet tournaments. But we can tell you that the rest of the final eight was filled out by ACC'ers, with Dick Ness (drness) of Port Orchard, WA in Second Place, and Emily Endo (LadyRed_spider1) of Paradise, CA and Mike Poole (TBird302ford) of Westminster, CO sharing Third Place. Tying for Fifth were Michael D'Elena (RI971), presumably staying up late from Providence, RI, Erica Millman (LadyErica_) from Houston, TX, Richard Winfield (rick98205) from Everett, WA and Australian expat Kerry O'Connell (aussiekekka) joining us from Ventura, CA. Nice going, gang!

The tournament was run by our veteran online host Joan Dulworth, who serves as the ACC's Internet Tournament Director Coordinator, and, like many of our hosts, comes to us from the Pegging Pals organization. (back...)
